12 April 2011 – At a bank in Luxembourg the IBM i monitoring tool Pager/Control has been implemented in combination with the systems management application Nagios. Pager/Control monitors the IBM i systems and the applications running on them 24x7. When a problem occurs on the IBM I, Pager/Control will send an SNMP TRAP to Nagios where it can be further handled in the same way as other servers on the network. The implementation of Pager/Control including the integration with Nagios was operational in just one day.

At the bank in question, the systems management application Nagios was initially used to monitor all systems, including the IBM i’s. Their IBM i is the platform which the bank uses for their core business applications, SAP and Olympic. Nagios was not able to provide the in depth monitoring of these applications which the bank required. The bank searched for a native monitoring tool for the IBM i’s. After detailed tests they selected Pager/Control.
Pager/Control supplied by SRC Secure Solutions was developed by sister organization Escherware, a Dutch company specialized in IBM  i monitoring and communications. At the bank in Luxembourg Pager/Control monitors multiple IBM i’s and LPARs. IBM i problems can be automatically resolved using Pager/Control APIs. When a problem or alert on the IBM i occurs, the Pager/Control SNMP Sub-Agent converts messages received from the monitored message queues into SNMP     TRAPs which are forwarded to the network monitoring system Nagios.
Nagios is an open source computer and network monitoring software application. Nagios monitors hosts and services, alerting system administrators when things go wrong and reporting when they are remedied. Nagios has a broad range of software modules to monitor systems. The package was originally developed for the monitoring of UNIX systems. Nagios now monitors network services, host resources and anything else which has the ability to send collected data via a network to specifically written plugins.
